WODONGA BOWLS CLUB
MAJOR+MINOR PAIRS TOURNAMENT.
Thursday 26th January 2017 the Wodonga Bowls Club again hosted it's annual Major/Minors pairs tournament. This year saw a change of the format instead of 2 and walk pairs, the match committee decide to play three bowl pairs.
80 players were present representing fifteen (15) different bowling clubs which was a fantastic turnout for the club and bowls in general. The weather conditions were perfect for bowls and there were some fantastic bowls played by all participating in the event. Ten sections of four teams competed, and there were some very handy combinations in the field, a number of the pairs are A1 pennant players in the Ovens and Murray.
By the end of the sectional play there were a large number of notable pairs eliminated from the tournament. Lunch was provided by the club after the sectionals finished, then the raffles were drawn with some great prizes won.
The post sectionals were then played over four ends, with two big A1 combinations in the Brimblecombe's and Cromie's bowing out. The ten section winners were finally whittled down to two pairs to playoof for the title, Ron Miller from Tallangatta and his partner Leslie Duncan from Wodonga and Alec Green and Geoff Brown from Wodonga. A great final it was, with Ron and Leslie prevailing over the four end final to claim the title for 2017, congratulations to both Ron and Leslie very well played over the whole day. Well done also to Alec and Geoff who also played some great bowls during the day.
All the teams that won through their respective sections were in the prize money which was gratefully donated by local business “GET OFF ROAD”. A great sponser whom we hope will continue to support this event and hopefully any 4WD owners within the club will patronise the “GET OFF ROAD” business. A big shout of appreciation also to the ladies who donated their time and provided the lunch on this day and also thank you to the bar staff who were kept busy throughout the tournament.
Well done to the Match Committee for putting together a fine tournament, the format was a welcomed change and hopefully this will continue in the future.
Finally well done to Geoff Brown and Alec Green and congratulations to the winners Ron Miller and Leslie Duncan.
